In February hearts begin to appear everywhere! You will find the message of love plastered on walls, broadcasted on TV and even some foods will take a heart shape for a few weeks. We love to think about love!
We search for books, movies or songs that speak of the true meaning of love. We roam the earth in search of a soul mate thinking that person can be the small void that only true love can fill. The truth is love has a very different meaning to a lot of people.
Our desire to love and be loved was placed inside us from birth. Our parents were our first taste of earthly love. The care and nurturing we received set up our minds to the beliefs and the act of love. It becomes our definition of love. Unfortunately not everyone has had a loving and nurturing childhood. The effects of abuse, neglect, abandonment and fear can destroy the true meaning of the word. Instead a warped definition arises out of the pain, rejection and sorrow. Just like many others I searched out for love only to be fooled by the clever imitations in the world.
I decided I was going to search out the true definition. If you google what is love you will see pages of articles or songs that speak of love. Each article tries its best to define the meaning of love. Songs listed have lyrics of broken love, unaccepted love, meaningless love and happily ever after love which was my hearts desire.
After searching in the world I went to the author of love. I went to God! I read in the bible the most beautiful definition of love and it made me smile. It read “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 NIV)”. God wrote what love is and what it’s not. He gave us a understanding and a rule book to follow.
Now after reading that I went back to look at my life and what amazed me is I could see the beautiful moments of love that I had experienced. Love was there all the time because God had provided it. God showed me in His words His love for us. In fact true love is something that endures forever. It doesn’t stop loving you because of your mistakes, but in spite of them. Love doesn’t demand or condemn. It’s there in the joy and is present during the pain.
Jesus said to His disciples the most important commandments were “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” (Mark 12:30, 31 NIV). God wants us to love Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. He wants every part of us to feel love for Him! He wants to be our valentine!! In loving Him we will then feel loved back. We will fill that empty void by filling it with true love.
When we are filled with God’s love He restores what has been missing. That’s why Jesus says to love God with all our heart. I believe than God loves our hearts filling it with hope and joy. To love God with all our soul so He can love us with His faith and peace. To love him with all our mind so that He can love using His wisdom and understanding. To love God with all our strength so He can fill us with a love of endurance and stamina to run the good race! When we give love than we get love in return. The good news is we get back much more than we give.
The second commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. Now why would God want us to love each other? It is written “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete
in us. (1 John 4:12 NIV)”. When we live in love and share love than God is revealed. It’s the way that God can correct the vision of His perfect love. By using Jesus as an example we can see love in its truest form. No judgement, no condemnation, no excuses or no persecution. He loved by healing, forgiving, teaching, sharing and giving completely!
God doesn’t take things from us, but gives things to us. All we have to do is let Him in. We have to trust and believe that God is all love ! In the bible it says “However, as it is written: “What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived” — the things God has prepared for those who love him— (1 Corinthians 2:9 NIV).
To me that means we just will never be able to fully grasp the love that God has for us His children. Love casts out our fear, love covers all our sins and God’s love endures forever! God is the perfect valentine!’!
